Our portfolio company Volantis just raised $88 million to make AI think at the speed of light. ⚡️

The Series A was co-led by Lachy Groom and Abstract Ventures, with John Doerr, VXI Capital, Triatomic and Susa Ventures. Jeff Dean, Dwarkesh Patel and Naveen Rao are in as angels.

Every AI chip today makes you choose: hold a giant model, or run it fast. Volantis is building chips that do both, moving data between chip and memory with light instead of wires. The target is models over 20 trillion parameters at up to 10,000 tokens per second per user, with first systems planned for customers in 2027. 📈

Pumped hydro has always needed a mountain. Ourea Energy builds the elevation instead. 🌄

Ourea’s energy storage tower patent was granted August 25. GravityBank pumps water up to store energy and releases it through turbines when the grid needs power. The flagship GB600 stands 600 meters and stores a gigawatt-hour.

Ourea is the first company to spin out of SOM in the firm’s 90-year history, built in partnership with Energy Vault. ⚡️

300 are already warming newborns in 55 facilities.
